Foamstream
L4Pers Cheryl Dyer and Mike McLaughlin recently attended a demonstration of the new Foamstream organic weedcontrol technology that has been purchased by the City of Laurel. Dustin Rosedale, Foamstream representative, explained that heat in the form of hot water kills weeds without harming animals, plants or nearby waterways. The foam produced holds the heat in, allowing seeds and spores to be sterilized. The foam does not drift so this system can be used in wind and rain. It is even safe to be used in tidal areas. The formula is 99.5% water with a small amount of plant oil and sugar added to make the foam.
Bill Bailey, Director of Parks and Recreation, said that Laurel is the first municipality in Maryland to purchase Foamstream, although it has been in use for 10 years in 20 countries and 4 continents. Mr. Rosedale says this method will even kill non-native invasive plants such as Japanese knotweed with 3 applications. Using different attachments, Dean Barham, Deputy Director of Parks and Rec, demonstrated the ability to clean and sanitize many surfaces, including concrete, wood and signs. This system will be a real asset for the municipality but at present has no application for home use.
